explication on the story:My Last Duchess

Last class, our group focused on many things and shared ideas on the story of My last duchess. In those discussions what interested me the most was “the point of view”.

This story of “My last duchess” is told in first person point of view. In other words a girl who is the main character is talking. So the point of view would be limited as all the thought are based on her personal ideas and might include some of the prejudice. For example she says only good things about Miss Bessie as you can see in page 56. It says, “Miss Bessie was the best English teacher in the school. Possibly she was one of the best in the city.” We came to an idea that she thinks Miss Bessie is great teacher because she is smart enough to understand the English lessons that are done by Miss Bessie and clever enough to keep up with her lessons. So if Bill or any other boys those were picked by Miss Bessie were telling this story, they won’t say such a good things about this teacher like the girl did. Also as you can see on page 63, Bill calls the poetry “That goddamn Duchess poem” which we can understand that he is feeling nauseous for not understanding the poem. I investigated that he might be having some anger toward Miss Bessie for choosing the poetry, My last duchess, for their class work. However from the main character’s point of view, she might think it is good training to do such a hard poetry as she has some kind of idea about the questions the teacher asks whereas Bill has no idea for it. So you can see that Bill has not much favourable impression toward Miss Bessie.

If the story was told in Bill’s point of view, the impression of the last feeling after they broke up might have changed in the reader’s mind. In this original story, which is written in the girl’s point of view, it gave us the impression of serious as it uses the metaphor of “dark tunnel” and also in the very last line she says “I’d be all on my own”. However the feeling of Bill and the girl isn’t always the same, so if Bill was thinking very lightly, for example he believes it’s only a quarrel they always have and they would be together by next day, the impression would change in the readers mind.

Our group thought that this story is compared to the poem of My last duchess. The Duke and the Duchess is compared to Bill and the main character in this story. The similarity of these story and poem are that they both are having easy mistakes and end with the couples being separated. And we thought the message of this story is that humans don’t learn and they make same mistakes over and over again as the mistakes doesn’t really change if we compare early days and modern days. Any ways, we thought that the basic of the story was quite similar so they were compared. However we came to a question that why didn’t the author made Bill the storyteller. The storyteller in the poetry is Duke who is male but storyteller in this story is a girl who is female and there is a quite big different point of view between male and female. What I can think of is that the status of male and female has become other way round as times passes. In the early days male was absolute and female had to obey or follow the male. So the status of male was very high than female. However in modern days there is not much difference in the status between the two. Actually female might be a little higher. So the author might have chosen a girl to be a storyteller who has better status than Bill.

Dance club's graduation trip

I’d like to talk about the graduation trip of the dance club. Traditionally, in my dance club, people graduate this club in the end of grade 2 so that in grade 3 we can concentrate on the studies of entrance exams. Actually even we graduate we still have many opportunity to dance so it’s not the real graduation. Anyway, because there were only 12 girls in my general we all went to Disney land for the graduation trip.

Before the day we go we were so excited that we planned many things: which attraction we are going to ride first and what are we going to eat for lunch and lots of others. However when we arrived at the Disney land we were all so high tensioned so that all the plans were forgotten and we just went where we want.

As there were 12 people first of all 3 people keep the entrance ticket and ran to the attraction called “Big thunder mountain” to get every one’s fast pass. At that time everyone else was in the queue of Space Mountain, which was very efficient. The long waiting time seemed very short, as we were talking all the time and also taking many stupid photos. Because there were 12 people and the vehicle of the Space Mountain was for 12 people we occupied one vehicle. So there was no worry for giggling loudly. We shouted the name of our dance teacher, as we loved her so much while we were riding this roller coaster.

In the “Big thunder mountain” we were posing the last pose of our dance piece called “dance party” so every one around us was looking us in strange eyes. Actually I am not used to the roller coaster so I sometimes held the handrail. Any way it was the first time I enjoyed roller coaster from heart in my life.

We rode many other attractions but what we laughed a lot was the “Jungle crews”. As you can imagine people in dance club tend to be so loud and has higher tension. Especially my high school was kind of the gathering of loud and weird people so we made lots of noise in this attraction. Also we talked to the guider, which his setting was the leader of the jungle crews. This leader said, “This time (which 12 of us rode) was the active ride in the crew I did today.”We were pleased with this word.

We also watched parade too. In the parade at daytime we divided in to two. One group who want to ride the “Winnie the Pooh’s honey hunt” and the other who want to watch the parade. As I went to the Winnie the Pooh’s honey hunt I didn’t watch the daytime parade but I watched the eletronical parade at night. We waved hand a lot to the characters and also the dancers. We also threw kisses to the character. Pinoccio realized us, and he gave us back throwing kiss, which was so cute! Since then I started to love Pinoccio.

We had a great time in Disney land and I hope we can go to Disney Sea next time if we have opportunity. And also I’d like to go to the Disney land with my new friends in Sophia University.

ESOL class

This week I would like to talk about ESOL, which I took in the Mount school. ESOL is a lesson for foreigners and we go to this lesson instead of the lessons that are hard to keep up such as French, Literacy and etc.

Generally, in ESOL class we study for Cambridge test. The level is varied so in the first lesson we took a test and see what level suit me. I started with the lower level that is called KET but the time I go back to Japan I was the level of CELS. I also had a chance to take level 4 of the LAMDA, which was a speaking test. I had hard time memorizing the words and intonations but by helping each other with my friend in ESOL, I was able to pass this exam.

It was not always studying by oneself but we sometimes work in groups and help each other by discussing and also sometimes we just had a chat including teacher. There was only one teacher so it was very easy for me to talk with her. As I had a chance to talk in the lesson I was able to have the confidence of talking in English and it didn’t take time for me to get used to enjoy talking with the classmate.

In each term there were trip that we can learn about England. I loved this trip so much. This trips open up my interest towards British history and culture. Before we go to trip we have a month of study on the place we are going. These studies were for all levels so when we had this lesson the upper students had the chance to practice translating English to Japanese to small students. We also went to see the “Mid Summer night’s dream” and another play by Shakespeare which play I can’t remember its name in open theatre. Before we see the play the higher-level students read few pages of the old English and also saw some movie on this play. There were so many characters in the Mid summer night’s dream so first I read the story I couldn’t understand but the ESOL teacher explained it to me very neatly so I was able to understand the play and watched the play enjoyably.

ESOL celebrated the celebrations too. For example in Easter we had an Easter party. Each students decorated the egg and we competed which one had the best decorations. In Christmas party we made the cookie house in a group and competed. Upper students contrived the games so I also had fun by contriving the games.

ESOL gave me many things. It opened up my interest of the British culture and also after having educated in ESOL, I felt I want to teach English to Japanese children in a way ESOL did. It was a great experience for me to know more about England and also enjoy learning English.

I believe the English education in Japan is only reading and understand. However the English education in ESOL was read, understand and then express what we understood by making things such as poster. When we studied about the fire of London in the ESOL lesson, we first learn what the fire of London is and then we made the newspaper of that time. Not only writing the newspaper but we also dip the paper in to the tea and made it as if it is old and also we burnt some part of the paper.

So I would like to do the lesson, where students can learn first and have the chance to express what they have learnt, if I were able to be the English teacher in the future.
